The Buckingham School is delighted to announce that Nicol Hick, Social Emotional Mental Health HLTA, has been recognised as the Thrive Apprentice of the Year by Best Practice Network as part of the 2026 Apprenticeship Awards.

The prestigious award celebrates apprentices who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their professional development, confidently apply new skills in their workplace, and make a measurable positive impact within their organisation.

Nicol undertook the Thrive apprenticeship to develop a more structured, evidence-informed approach to supporting students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Combining her strong interest in neuroscience and psychology with her day-to-day work with young people, Nicol has embraced the programme with dedication, consistently reflecting on and adapting her practice to ensure the best outcomes for students.

The impact of Nicol’s work has already been significant. Through the development of targeted action plans and Thrive-informed approaches, she has strengthened relationships with students more quickly, resulting in increased trust, improved engagement and greater openness from pupils. Her work has also contributed to improved attendance at Thrive sessions and small-group interventions, while helping staff better identify and respond to students’ needs, including those that may not be immediately visible.

As a result, the School’s Thrive provision has continued to flourish, with students increasingly viewing the Thrive space as a safe, supportive and trusted environment where they can access the help they need.

Presenting the award, Headteacher Andrew McGinnes and Assistant Headteacher and SENCo Mrs Lockhart praised Nicol’s achievement and the positive difference she continues to make across the school community.

Mr McGinnes, Headteacher, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Nicol and this well-deserved recognition. Her commitment to supporting our students, particularly those facing social, emotional and mental health challenges, has had a profound impact. Nicol’s dedication, professionalism and willingness to continually develop her practice embody the values we strive for at The Buckingham School.”

Mrs Lockhart, Assistant Headteacher and SENCo, added:
“Nicol has embraced the Thrive apprenticeship with enthusiasm and determination. The knowledge and skills she has gained have translated directly into improved outcomes for our students. This award recognises not only her hard work and commitment but also the meaningful relationships she has built with young people across the school.”

Reflecting on the award, Ms Hick said:
“I am honoured to receive this recognition. The Thrive apprenticeship has given me valuable tools and insights that have strengthened my practice and helped me better support our students. Seeing the positive impact on young people has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the support of colleagues and students throughout this journey.”

This award reflects both Nicol’s individual dedication and the growing impact of Thrive-informed practice at The Buckingham School, reinforcing the school’s commitment to supporting the wellbeing and success of every student.
