Physical Education
Physical Education Department Intent
The Physical Education (PE) Curriculum aims ‘To prepare students for life, through positive and meaningful experiences in Physical Education’.
At Key Stage 3, students develop competence and confidence across a range of activities, including team invasion games, athletics, gymnastics and outdoor and adventurous activities. We focus on building fundamental skills, tactical understanding, and the values of fairness and respect.
At Key Stage 4, we deepen students’ knowledge of physical fitness, performance, and healthy active lifestyles. Through core and examination PE pathways, students refine their skills, evaluate their performance, and understand the long-term benefits of physical activity on physical, mental, and social well-being.
At Key Stage 5, we prepare students for future study or employment in the sport and physical activity sector. Through A Level PE, BTEC Sport, and Sports Leadership courses, students engage in independent study, leadership opportunities, applied anatomy and physiology, and sport-specific research, developing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in higher education, apprenticeships, or careers in the sport, health, and fitness industries.
Across all key stages, we embed the values of respect, inclusivity, and integrity, ensuring students thrive as physically literate individuals equipped for modern life.
PE Department Ethos
At the heart of our PE Department is a commitment to respect, togetherness and inclusivity. Our ethos is underpinned by the belief that physical activity enhances not only physical well-being but also emotional resilience, teamwork, and character.
- Engagement at Key Stage 3: We create a dynamic and supportive environment where all students are encouraged to participate fully, enjoy learning new skills, and develop a positive relationship with physical activity. Students are empowered to set personal goals and reflect on their performance.
- Independence at Key Stage 4: Students build resilience, self-motivation, and leadership through increasingly challenging physical tasks and opportunities to take responsibility for their own improvement. They develop a deeper understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and become advocates for physical activity in and beyond school.
- Exemplary at Key Stage 5: Our older students act as role models, demonstrating integrity, commitment, and leadership within the school and local community. Through coaching, officiating, and mentoring, they inspire younger students and develop as confident, reflective, and ethical leaders ready to make a positive impact.

Success in PE comes from consistent practice, curiosity and engagement beyond the classroom. The more students immerse themselves in sport, health and physical activity, the more confident and successful they become.
We encourage all students and families to make full use of these resources throughout the year to support achievement, wellbeing and a lifelong interest in sport and physical activity.
