Design, Technology and Vocational Courses

In Technology we strive to inspire students to embrace all aspects of new and old technologies.

The Buckingham School Design and Technology Department cover a wide range of skills and knowledge including Product Design, Food Technology, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Systems and Control:-Electronics.

Students are given an opportunity to develop skills in these areas which they can build  on in Years 9, 10 and 11. Students are taught skills with hand tools and machines as well as learning how to design, create, test and evaluate a range of products.

We also offer BTEC in Construction and Motor Vehicle from Year 9 to Year 11. For Years 10 and 11 we offer the OCR Innovator Suite. 

Resisitant Materials

In Year 7 students produce a toy monster which involves research, design, wood skills, mechanism and electronic. In Year 8 students research, design, make and package at least two items of jewellery, one in Aluminum and Acrylic and one in Pewter.  Click on to the VLE for specific detail relating to the Resistant Materials. 

BTEC Construction 

Welcome to Construction BTEC Level 2 Certificate and Diploma. We offer students a wide range of active, vocational learning that will help students achieve their full potential. The course provides rewards for hard work and effort with ongoing assessments and no exams.  

  • Level 2 Certificate offers 2 core (mandatory) units plus one optional unit. 
  • Level 2 Extended Certificate offers 2 core units plus 4 optional units.
  • Level 2 Diploma offers 3 core units plus 9 optional units.  

Students can achieve grades A*-C at GCSE and the BTEC certificates equate to the following qualifications:- 

  • Level 2 Certificate = 1 GCSE grades A*-C
  • Level 2 Extended Certificate = 2 GCSE grades A*-C
  • Level 2 Diploma Certificate = 4 GCSE grades A*-C


In Year 9, students produce projects designed to develop the skills needed for their GCSE course. These include design and make a pop-up card, redesign and model an interior, develop a poster which makes good use of perspective.

Food Technology

Year 7 - The Basics

In this first year students will gain experience in how to cook recipes, learn basic skills and how to use equipment. Students will cook once a week and all recipes are on the VLE Food Technology. Food safety and Hygiene are paramount.

Year 8 - The Healthy Lunch Task

In Year 8 students will continue with their journey to learn new recipes skills and knowledge. Further knowledge of nutrition and Health and Safety will be gathered. Students will be cooking once a week.

Year 9 - Food Technology Option

This is the first year of the Food Technology option. Students will further their skills and techniques Students will continue to cook once a week. Student will study either BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate Hospitality (BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate Hospitality is the equivalent of two GCSE C-A*) or OCR Innovator Suite GCSE Food Technology.
