Year 13 Update - letter dated 4 May 2020

I hope you and your families are keeping well. I am writing to update you on a few things that are happening in Sixth Form over the next few weeks.

Your priority in recent weeks has been to complete your Level 3 courses and file away your notes. Once your courses are completed, your teachers will be offering subject specific bridging work for you to complete. You may choose to complete this work as you are interested in a career in this subject now or later on, or you may be studying this subject at University in September.

Now that courses are coming to an end, we wanted to offer you some opportunities to learn some practical life skills that you may find yourself needing in the following year or beyond.

Currently, Mr Cunningham is compiling a Careers point of reference booklet for you to refer to, in the coming months, regarding different career paths you may be looking into. Mrs Simmons is organising a study skills for life booklet. The skills included are aimed towards those you may need next year when completing training in employment, University or apprenticeships. It is not only aimed at University applicants; there will be something in there for you all to benefit from. Finally, Mrs Gibson-Smith is organising some practical life skills and advice to pass on for next year.

We would very much like to keep your relationships strong within the Sixth Form. The abrupt end to your daily attendance in the Sixth Form in March, followed by courses completed online, will feel very detached from the way we were all expecting to say goodbye and wish you well. We have yet to confirm how results day will work in August. Rest assured, we will organise a Sixth Form reunion and celebration of your time in the Sixth Form when it is safe to do so!

I commend you in the way you have adapted to a great deal of change, in such a short period of time. We are really proud of how you have risen to such unexpected challenges.

In the following weeks, we would like you to continue to email your Form Tutor each week, so we know you are safe and well, especially during the lockdown period. Please also check your emails once a day in case any new information is passed on to you that you may need to act upon.

I have been speaking with Universities and they have pressed upon me to remind you that it is not too late for you to apply to University for this September. They are on your side and appreciate the difficulty you are experiencing at this time. They are working on ways to be more flexible in supporting students. Your original plans of taking a year out for employment/apprenticeships may now be uncertain. If you would like advice on applying to University for September, please contact Mr Cunningham.

Year 12 will be taking part in an online University application day Tuesday 19th May. You are more than welcome to join in if you are still considering applying to University for next September (2021). More details about this will follow shortly.

Don’t forget assembly on Wednesday 6 May 1.50pm. The Google meet code is year13assembly

We are missing you and the relationships we enjoy with you all. If you need help of any kind - just ask! Stay safe, take care of yourselves and your families. Looking forward to seeing you all in assembly on Wednesday!

With my best wishes

Mrs S Pykett, Assistant Headteacher Director of Sixth Form
